Director, Languages

We have a challenging yet rewarding opportunity in our National Office in Wellington for an experienced leader and professional in the role of Director, Languages. This role exists to lead and manage the work of the Languages Unit including leadership of the team and to provide advice and reporting to our Senior Leadership team - Tautua, Ministers and stakeholders. In this role you will be required to:

  • Provide policy advice, information and assistance to the Minister for Pacific Peoples
  • Providing advice to Ministers on Pacific languages revitalisation
  • Provide advice and information to other public service departments on the context, circumstances, issues and opportunities faced by Pacific communities in New Zealand
  • Liaise and communicate with Pacific communities in New Zealand so that they are knowledgeable about government policies, processes and services of relevance to them, to foster greater engagement with, and participation by Pacific people in decision-making
  • Undertake other projects, including strategic advice, within our capability and as required
  • Commissioning of research and publishing information on Pacific languages
  • Establishing and/or maintaining the technical conventions of Pacific languages (orthography); and
    funding community-based Pacific languages initiatives, programmes and courses

The role and mission of the Head of Unit is critical as they will be responsible for developing the All of Government Languages Strategy.  The Ministry needs someone who can hit the ground running and who will know what needs to be done and can deliver.  You will have strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate to various audiences, as well as have sound experience in Policy and providing policy advice.

About you

You will have a Tertiary qualification or a related field and have a minimum of 10 years relevant experience working with the public sector in Senior roles. You will have an excellent understanding and awareness of the public sector context in which the Ministry for Pacific Peoples operates. You must be good at communicating the big picture as well as getting into the detail and delivering on initiatives and be fluent in a Pacific language and have some knowledge of and empathy for the organisation's journey and values. You will have a sound working knowledge of key issues impacting Pacific languages development and regeneration.

To help you succeed, you will be given the opportunity to:

  • Lead languages strategy, developing and setting a work programme that supports the strategy and is in support of the Ministry's strategic direction
  • Develop languages revitalisation targets and plans to achieve those
  • Lead the development of community-based language initiatives and programmes, including aligning these with the overall work programme and goals Maintaining an up-to-date awareness of social and political factors that impact on implementation of languages revitalisation initiatives and programmes to anticipate and incorporate these as appropriate
  • Work closely with the CEO and DCE, Policy Research and Evaluation in providing languages revitalisation and programmes advice to Ministers
    Provide advice on the direction and/or scope of languages projects including providing guidance on best practise methodologies, techniques and procedures
  • Provide quality assurance on languages policy development and projects as required
  • Leading and managing the Languages Team to ensure efficient and effective delivery against work programme and plans
  • Building the team capability by coaching and/or providing development opportunities
  • Developing and maintaining external networks of significance to ensure relevancy and support of the Ministry's role in languages revitalisation, and to promote the Ministry's role in this
  • Working with external agencies and organisation as required to provide intellectual subject matter expertise and leadership into languages revitalisation
